Ice Axes

A climbing ice axe is a specialized tool used in mountaineering, ice climbing, and alpine climbing. It helps climbers maintain balance, stop falls, cut steps, and ascend steep snow or ice. The type of ice axe you need depends on your activity—whether you're trekking across glaciers or scaling frozen waterfalls.

Types of Climbing Ice Axes:

1. Classic Mountaineering Ice Axe

  • Straight or slightly curved shaft

  • Used as a walking aid, for self-arrest, or step-cutting

  • Lightweight and versatile

Best for: Glacier travel, general mountaineering, snow ascents

2. Technical Ice Axe (Ice Tools)

  • Heavily curved shaft

  • Aggressive pick for swinging into steep ice

  • Typically shorter, used in pairs

Best for: Vertical ice climbing, mixed climbing, dry tooling

3. Alpine / Hybrid Ice Axe

  • Moderately curved shaft

  • Balances walking support with climbing function

  • Can be used for both moderate ice climbing and steep snow

Best for: Steep alpine routes with mixed terrain

Parts of an Ice Axe:

PartDescription
Pick Curved, toothed edge for self-arrest or climbing ice
Adze Flat blade opposite the pick for chopping steps or clearing snow
Hammer (on some models)      Used to drive in protection (ice screws or pitons)
Shaft Long handle, straight or curved, typically aluminum or carbon
Spike Pointed end of the shaft for plunging into snow
Leash Wrist strap or tether to prevent dropping the axe

Choosing the Right Length:

  • For general mountaineering: When held by your side, the spike should reach your ankle.

  • For steep or technical climbs: Shorter axes (50–60 cm) are better for swinging and control.
