Crampons

Climbing crampons are spiked metal traction devices that attach to the bottom of mountaineering or ice climbing boots. They’re designed to provide grip and stability on ice, snow, and steep alpine terrain—making them essential gear for ice climbing, glacier travel, mountaineering, and mixed climbing (rock + ice).

What Do Crampons Do?

  • Prevent slipping on ice and snow

  • Allow you to climb vertical ice and mixed terrain

  • Improve safety and efficiency on steep or technical ground

Key Features of Crampons:

PartFunction
Points (spikes) Usually 10–14 sharp steel or aluminum spikes that dig into snow, ice, or rock
Front Points Used for kicking into ice or steep snow (vertical or horizontal orientation)
Heel and Toe Bindings       Secure the crampons to your boots
Anti-balling plates Prevent snow from clumping underfoot
Material Steel (durability for ice/rock), aluminum (lighter for snow travel)

Types of Crampons:

TypeAttachmentBest For
Strap-on (Universal) Nylon straps fit almost any boot Hiking, glacier travel, general mountaineering
Step-in (Automatic) Lever + toe bail system; requires boots with front & rear welts Technical ice climbing, steep alpine
Hybrid (Semi-automatic)            Heel lever + front strap; boots need a heel welt Mountaineering, mixed climbing

Crampon Types by Activity:

ActivityIdeal Crampons
General mountaineering 10–12 point, strap-on or hybrid, horizontal front points
Ice climbing 12+ point, step-in, vertical or aggressive front points
Mixed climbing / dry tooling Technical designs with adjustable or mono-point front
Glacier travel / ski mountaineering      Lightweight aluminum crampons, often strap-on

Tips for Choosing Crampons:

  • Match crampons to your boot type and climbing objective.

  • Make sure the crampons fit snugly and don’t shift.

  • Use anti-balling plates in wet snow conditions.

  • Keep them sharp and rust-free for best performance.
